Learning in Depth is a simple concept. It is learning one topic beyond the scope of the normal classroom curriculum. For one hour per week, students will engage in an exploratory study of an assigned topic. The purpose of LiD is threefold: 1. students will become an expert on one topic during their school years 2. students will transfer their learning strategies from LiD to other curricular areas and 3. students will discover a love of learning that will last long after school is done. Creating 'life-long learners' has been an educational goal for years, yet many people do not readily engage in learning or do not recognize all the learning taking place in adulthood. When we discover how we learn and why we learn, we are more likely to continue to learn for as long as we can. Too many people think that learning is just something you do at school, but in reality we are learning everyday from our environment, from people, from work and so on. LiD offers a new direction for thinking and learning. It allows for wonder, imagination and creativity to have its place back in the educational realm.
